"Papia was angry - not the base level of anger that all ducks have, but anger that could melt all the bronze in the Six Stones temple and put a dent in their iron supply too. It wasn’t that the humans at the Tula had been rude, she had expected that. It wasn’t the flat denial that the clan had participated in the Duck Hunt and sold out the Durulz for the price of a few cows. No, it was the shrug of the chieftain’s shoulders and the attitude of “Let’s not bicker and argue about who killed who and just move on.
She made another notch in her counting stick and squawked irritability at the other members of the diplomatic group she had been assigned to lead. She briefly considered just filling the stick with notches and going home, abandoning Greenface’s plan for healing through truth and reconciliation, but she and dozens like her had taken on that burden so that others would not suffer; ironically, those others would include humans if the old shaman’s prophecies were right.
If the humans did not heed the words of the Durulz now, then one way or another they would pay for what they had done. Without the Durulz, they would carry the burdens and recite the Lamentations. Perhaps, she thought, that was the only way they would ever learn."
Sartar has thrown off the shackles of Lunar oppression and pushed the forces of the Scarlet Harlot to the edge of the kingdom. Decimated by the Empire, betrayed for a handful of silver by their neighbours, and driven from their god-appointed homeland, the Durulz have much work to do. The Upland Marsh has expanded with the rituals of the tribe left unattended, the Creek-Stream River has been disrespected, and Duck Vale is rife with abandoned slaves, refugees, and disenfranchised warriors looking for easy pickings. The Durulz know they will be blamed for all of this and more, but if the Durulz are to survive they must rebuild and prepare for what is to come. The destiny of the tribe, perhaps even of Sartar itself, rests in the hands of a few ducks. Who will rise to the challenge?
