"Bientôt", arrivée de l'excellent jeu "The God's War":

Sarah Newton:
I've been wondering about Humakti Severing, the ritual cutting of kin and community ties which comes with Humakti initiation. What are the practical consequences of that? I'm assuming they're focussed on the legal aspects of community membership (wergild, etc); but are there any implications for drawing on community benefits, such as being able to use the powers of a clan wyter, or approach a clan chief for military or other aid?

Given that there are Humakti chieftains and even tribal kings, I'm guessing that the actual day-to-day interaction between Humakti and other clanmembers continues largely as normal - Humakti have de facto personal relationships within a community - but that legally no one's bound to treat with them. I'm also wondering about the magical aspects of this too - does the wyter have any responsibility to them?

Notes on the Many Suns and the Sun Gods of Prax

Most Orlanthi of the late Third Age call the sun disk "Yelm". Some say he serves or is carried by Elmal, others say he is the distant father of the more helpful Yelmalio. Some say the sun disk is the depersonalised Ehilm. Some heroquesters say all four is correct.
+
If you ask the average Orlanthi in a place like Clearwine who the sun god is, they'll likely give you three answers:

1. Yelmalio. He is the Cold Sun, the Last Light that refused to fall in the Darkness. He is proud and independent, and although he is not a friend of Orlanth, he is a foe of the Darkness and of Chaos. His temples are locally powerful, and his cultists proud and arrogant.

2. Elmal. He is also called the Cold Sun and serves Orlanth. Elmal carries the Sun Disk, and helped humans in the Great Darkness. Many say he is a friendly mask of Yelmalio and those cults are intertwined. His temples are few, and his cult small, but he supported by the Orlanth temples. We Orlanthi call on him when we call upon the powers of Sky.

3. Yelm is the Sun God, and Emperor of the gods before Orlanth killed him and started the Gods War. He is the Sun Disk, too distant and too remote for us to worship, if we were even inclined. Orlanth made peace with him after the Lightbringers Quest and he is necessary for the world to function, and thus we acknowledge him, even if we do not worship him.
+
If I were to redo Elmal for HQ, he'd have Light, and not the full Fire Rune.
+
Having written lengthy descriptions of over 50 cults, this really boils down to me making a judgment call. Is it better to treat Elmal, Yelmalio, and Kargzant as:

1. Independent cults like Orlanth and Storm Bull. Sure they are both associated Air deities but everyone knows that Orlanth is not Storm Bull and vice versa.

2. Separate write-ups like Ernalda and Dendara. One core cult writeup, with another short writeup saying that the God Learners (and others) believe that the cults are the same, and even managed to transpose worshipers with no ill effects, but they never succeeded to get either deity to admit identity with the other.

3. Treat them all as variations of each other. Y(Elmali)io and Kargzant are just different masks for the same solar deity, and generally recognised as such by their worshipers. They might have some different spells (and only Yelmalio has gifts and geases) but they are working off the same template.

Option 1 is clearly wrong, and I think option 2 is misleading. Option 3 fits the situation the best.
+
All what is in the Guide is (still) canon.

Pg. 646: This is the only problematic section in the whole guide:

"The Sun is worshiped in some form by most peoples in Glorantha. Yelm, the Dara Happan Sun God, is the most widespread name given to this god, and is known in many lands outside of Peloria. Most Orlanthi say that the Sun is Elmal, a thane of Orlanth, while in Pent it is Kargzant, the Horse God who was a rival of Yelm when the Pentans ruled Dara Happa in the First Age. In Teshnos the Sun is called Somash, in Kralorela it is the celestial representation of Emperor Vashanti (who ruled during the Grey Age), and among the Doraddi it is called Varama, one of the sons of Balumbasta."

I admit that is not as carefully written as I wish. If I were to edit this paragraph I'd have it read:
"The Sun is worshiped in some form by most peoples in Glorantha. Yelm, the Dara Happan Sun God, is the most widespread name given to this god, and is known in many lands outside of Peloria. MANY Orlanthi say that the Sun is Elmal, a thane of Orlanth, while in Pent it is SOMETIMES Kargzant, the Horse God who was a rival of Yelm when the Pentans ruled Dara Happa in the First Age. In Teshnos the Sun is called Somash, in Kralorela it is the celestial representation of Emperor Vashanti (who ruled during the Grey Age), and among the Doraddi it is called Varama, one of the sons of Balumbasta."

To be honest, I am not troubled by the Elmal part in here (I should have said "many" not "most" but ok), but the Kargzant stuff is really misleading. Kargzant is Lightfore not the Sun. But ok, I am sure most Gloranthan scholars make mistakes about that as well.

=> STILL CANON, but SLOPPILY WRITTEN.
+
Here is a section on the Many Suns that appears in the Yelmalio cult writeup in Gods and Goddesses of Glorantha:

THE MANY SUNS

There are several solar cults who are often identified with Yelmalio. These are sometimes treated as independent deities, sometimes as different names for Yelmalio, and sometimes as subcults of Yelm or some other solar deity. These cults resemble Yelmalio’s cult in most respects (including spells) but rarely offer gifts and geases.

ANTIRIUS

This subcult of Yelm worshiped in the Lunar Heartlands shares a substantially similar mythology to Yelmalio, and Second Age scholars viewed Antirius as the Dara Happan version of Yelmalio. Antirius provides Sunbright.

Antirius is normally worshiped as a subcult of Yelm and not as an independent cult.

ELMAL

Elmal is a variation of Yelmalio found in Kethaela and parts of Dragon Pass. The Elmal cult resembles Yelmalio’s cult in most respects (including spells) but does not have gifts and geases. Elmal is associated with Orlanth, Ernalda, and Hyalor cults. He receives the Shield spell from the Storm King instead of Yelm.

After Yelm was killed by Orlanth, Elmal settled his feud with Orlanth and swore to serve him. When Orlanth departed on his Lightbringers Quest, the Storm God named Elmal to rule the world while he was gone. Elmal defended the last flickering lights of the world against Chaos and was wounded, battered, and weakened many times. Yet Elmal never faltered, and he survived as a last light in the Darkness until Orlanth and the other gods returned with the Dawn.

Although Elmal was initially worshiped as the returned sun by the Dawn Council, in the later First Age his cult was largely subsumed into that of Yelm or Yelmalio. Only in Heortland did his cult survive intact. During the early Third Age, the Heortland was isolated from Peloria by the Inhuman Occupation of Dragon Pass and were part of the Shadowlands ruled by the Only Old One. When Dragon Pass was later resettled by Heortlanders, they came into contact with the solar cults of Peloria and the Elmal cult was thrown into turmoil.

During the reign of King Tarkalor, the Sartarite hero Monrogh the Founder revealed that Elmal was a mask of Yelmalio. Most Elmal cultists joined the new Sun Dome Temple that Monrogh founded in Dragon Pass, although some remained with their traditional tribal cults.

Elmal is perhaps best thought of as that part of Yelmalio that loyally aided Orlanth and defended his people during the Darkness. Yelmalio is that part of Elmal that was a rival of Orlanth. They are different names for the same entity. Yelmalio is now the more popular name, but Elmal is still invoked.

KARGZANT

Kargzant is a Lightfore cult worshiped by the Pentan nomads. His cult resembles Yelmalio’s cult in most magical respects but emphasizes Riding and replaces Pike skill with the Lance skill. Kargzant is even more closely associated with the Pentan Yelm cult (called Yu-Kargzant) and with the Hyalor cult, and has the Command Horse spell. He is also associated with Polaris who provides Arrow of Light. As with Elmal, Kargzant does not have gifts and geases.
+
Mythic History of Yelmalio telle qu'elle est prévue dans Gods and Goddesses of Glorantha:

Yelmalio was born when Yelm was murdered by Orlanth, as a blindingly bright glare of magnificence which radiated from Yelm like light from the sun. He became known as the Little Sun or “Yelmalio”, although he has been given many other names and titles.

Confronted by a broken world, Yelmalio remained true, though it cost him dearly to do so. During the early wars in which mortals supported their gods, Yelmalio led his people from the warm lowlands into the cold hills, carrying high the magic and power of his father. He protected Ernalda, Yelmalio fought against the growing Darkness; he swore to protect many so that they might survive the Gods War.

Yelmalio did not always succeed. Among those he swore to protect was Ernalda the Earth Mother. Orlanth stole Ernalda from Yelmalio, so Yelmalio struck the Three Blows of Anger, killing three air deities, but he never regained Ernalda. At the Hill of Gold, Yelmalio was disarmed by Orlanth, fought Inora to a standstill, and then he was ambushed by Zorak Zoran, who stole his fire powers. The Cold Sun fell and bled out his life-giving heat and power upon the Hill of Gold. His favored weapons of bow and sword fell also and were absorbed into the knowledge of the whole world. However, he did not abandon his oath to protect those under his care.

Wounded, robbed, and hounded from place to place, Yelmalio carried the spark of life throughout the Darkness. Frozen, limping through the leafless forests, the glow of Yelmalio gave hope to the elves and humans who clung to the light.

Yelmalio’s wounds did not deter his struggle or weaken his resolve. He joined with the High King Elf and others to fight against the relentless approach of chaos. He became the Last Light, the strongest god of light in the Great Darkness. Yelmalio fought fiercely in the Great Darkness, and even aided Orlanth, who grudgingly settled their feud. When Orlanth departed on his Lightbringers’ Quest, Yelmalio defended Orlanth's people as well.

Yelmalio survived the Great Darkness, and the sky overhead was sometimes a distant grey color, and then the stars reappeared. Yelmalio grew stronger and became larger, and the survivors crept out of hiding to offer thanks. He wandered about the sky at first, to better aid the survivors, but eventually adopted a constant path.

Yelmalio greeted the rise of his father, the Sun god Yelm, at the Dawn. Since that time, Yelmalio has lived in the mountains and hills, and even the staunchest Orlanth worshipper admits the presence of the Son of the Sun. Yelmalio provides his light even when and where Yelm’s Sun Disk is absent.
+ en résumé:
Many Elmal cultists accept that Yelmalio is a mask of Elmal and vice versa.

You all may do with Elmal as you want - as far as the official version is concerned, Elmal has the same basic Rune magic and spirit magic as Yelmalio (which shouldn't be surprising). Elmal does not have Sunspear or Fireblade or Firearrow - despite what *I* wrote in Sartar: Kingdom of Heroes (and if we ever update SKH I will definitely fix some overly broad description I included in that book).

The biggest difference is that Yelmalio has gifts and geases and Elmal does not, and Elmal is an associate of Orlanth, while Yelmalio is an associate of Yelm (and other Sky Gods). Also Yelmalio temples train their members in Pike and Shield, and Elmal temples do not (although they may have in the past!).

If we view Elmal as being the cult of Yelmalio restricted to those myths where Yelmalio aided Orlanth and Orlanth's people - as seen by Orlanth and his people - we can see the contours of the Elmal cult. We can also see why Monrogh's revelation was so broadly embraced (and if we look really carefully we can even see why the House of Sartar would support his revelation). For the Elmal initiate, Monrogh's revelation meant taking a gift and a geas from the Little Sun. And also getting a whole series of additional stories about your god that supplement but do not replace the first story. Your god gets a promotion, you get a cool gift, and the other Sun Dome Temples will teach you superior fighting tactics.

Those who refused to accept the "sequels" (I think of them like fans of the original Star Wars movie, who refused to embrace the broader story elements in Empire Strikes Back) had community reasons for doing so. Yelmalio is not associated with the Lightbringers, which means his temples are not going to be supported by the tribal Orlanth cult. Where Elmal is the tribal patron, that's not a problem but for tribes like the Colymar or the Cinsina, it means your temple needs to stand on its own. That's a social problem, not a mythological one.

So even though most Elmal cultists embraced Monrogh's revelations, a few rejected it. Ironically, one could argue that makes Elmal the "purist" and "reactionary" cult

Jeff:
Yelmalio is the greater Elmal and his initiates gained greater insights into the Little Sun. The god we now know as Yelmalio wasn't a mere obedient lackey of Orlanth but an independent ruler in his own right. His gifts are wondrous blessings (and their oaths bring one closer to god); his high priests can call down the Sun Spear, whereas those who know Yelmalio only as Elmal cannot.

As Dragon Pass came into direct contact with the rich Solar civilisations of the Pelorian lowlands, the Elmal cult was greatly affected and began to fall into the orbit of the Pelorian Yelm cult. Brother fought brother and clans tore themselves apart. It seemed likely that this would tear apart the young Kingdom of Sartar, but instead Elmal was revealed to be Yelmalio, an independent ruler and lackey of neither Orlanth OR Yelm. And a god who had not submitted to the Red Goddess's viceroy (unlike Yelm).
+
The Hendrikings had a solar god who defending the cosmos after Orlanth and the other gods departed. He was always pretty minor and when the Hendrikings resettled Dragon Pass, they came into contact with the rich and vibrant Yelm cult - who even the dominant Orlanth cult acknowledged as the Sun God. Many abandoned their traditional rites to try to approach Yelm (usually through an associated cult) - which caused kinstrife and threatened the Sartar confederation.

Monrogh ended that. He revealed that the traditional solar god was the Sun Dome God, and not an inferior version of Yelm. He showed folk how to reach higher and filled in missing pieces of the god's mythology. Most solar cultists acknowledged the authority of the Sun Dome Temple, although a few maintained their own independence.

Whether the Sun Dome god is called Elmal or Yelmalio, neither are foreign invaders, any more than Storm Bull or Babeester Gor is.
+
> Why isn't Yelmalio a subordinate of Yelm?

In part, that's the mythology of Yelmalio - his stories don't kick into action until AFTER Yelm is killed. It is also historical - the Yelmalio cult didn't develop as part of the Dara Happen empire. As a result, there is neither a magical or a political basis for the cult to take a subservient position. The gods are associated - Yelm is an associated cult with Yelmalio and gives the high priests (both Rune Priests and Rune Lords) access to Sun Spear. But the cults are separate and removed.
+
The one advantage Elmal has over Yelmalio is he gets Shield from Orlanth. But Yelmalio gets Catseye, Command Hawk, gifts and his ranking priests get Sun Spear from Yelm. I consider that to be considerably better magic than just Catseye and Sunbright. Heck, the gifts alone are worth the switch (raise Spear or Bow to 90%? Talk to your horse? Speak languages? Supersize or supersmart me? Heck yeah!).
+
The Praxian Sun Domers are most definitely not the norm for the cult.

The Praxian Yelmalio cult is unusual for an obvious reason - it has been isolated for many centuries and is still geographically isolated. As a result, its social culture is going to differ from that of Dragon Pass and Peloria.

Horses are revered by the cult, even if the cult itself is not necessarily a "riding cult". Sows and snakes are revered by Ernalda, but last I checked, Earth Priestesses do not ride snake or sow. Hyalor is the "rider's cult".

The biggest difference [with other Sun Dome Temples] is the xenophobia and hostility shown by the Praxian Sun Domers to all outsiders. Most Yelmalians are aloof and distrustful of those outside the cult, but the Praxian Sun Dome takes that to extremes.
+
jeffjerwin:
In both areas where Yelmalio displaced Elmal (the Far Place/Alda-Chur) and on the Hendrikiland-Sartar border there were and are trolls. Is Yelmalio better at fighting trolls? That could also be a practical reason why the change occurred.

MOB:

Catseye and Sunbright are among the rune spells that make Yelmalio adherents highly formidable troll fighters, effectively negating the advantages trolls get attacking in darkness.

jeffjerwin:

This makes sense. Monrogh and his converts fought specifically for Tarkalor against the Kitori. They were rewarded with lands in Forthanland and the Amber Fields... So the ascendency of the Yelmalians corresponds to greater conflict with trolls/shadowlords. Monrogh's closeness with Tarkalor also suggests that Yelmalians were favoured by the later House of Sartar because of this consideration, along with their military value.

Elmal is more valuable to clans and tribes that prize cooperation/detante with darkness, water, and other "stranger pantheons" that Orlanth brought into the stead (though it seems to be suppressed among the non-Torkani and Kitori, there is evidence (I think) that Darkness Woman and other spirits from Below were indeed living at the Storm Stead).
